Spain is known for its numerous and colorful "fiestas", and one of them is the carnival. The country is host to several of the largest carnival celebrations in Europe, and they all take place in late February to early March.

There are a few speculations on the origins of Carnival in Spain. Most popularly it is believed the term Carnival derives from the words “farewell to the flesh," a reference to the excesses that led up to the sombre Lent. Carnival is celebrated all over the country, but the most famous carnival festivals take place in Tenerife, Cadiz and Stiges. Especially famous is the Carnival of Tenerife, which is one of Europe's largest and one of the most famous after the carnival in Rio. Each town has its own unique celebration, but typically you will see large parades with extravagant costumes, masks, music, dance and a lot of life. Spaniards are knwon to uphold their traditions and everyone joins in on the festivities.

In Torrevieja there are two main parades. The first one takes place on February 19th at 16.00, while the second takes place on February 25th at 22.00. Both parades start at Plaza María Asunción, before moving on to Calle Ramón Gallud and Calle Patricio Pérez. In Alicante the carnival is celebrated from February 23rd to March 5th, but the main celebration and parade will take place on the 25th of February.

If you area in Spain in late February till early March, this is something that is worth joining. It is recommended to book a table at a restaurant near the route of the parade for dinner. After the parade is over the party continues at the bars and clubs until the morning hours. All you need to bring with you this evening is a good mood!
